In a heartfelt narrative, Karrie Hughes-Kay shares her deeply personal journey with her mother, Jutta Glavind, and their family’s long battle with Alzheimer’s disease. This poignant account not only highlights the struggles of caring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s but also underscores the resilience, hope, and love that define their journey.

A Love Story and a Lingering Shadow

Over 35 years ago, Karrie’s father fell in love with Jutta Glavind, a spirited woman from Denmark and the second of four daughters. Early on, Karrie witnessed Jutta’s family’s battles with Alzheimer’s as her father was diagnosed, followed by her mother. This familial pattern cast a long shadow, making Jutta perpetually wary of her own future.

The Onset of Alzheimer’s

The real test began during a trip to Hawaii when Jutta, then showing normal signs of aging, experienced a fall that left her bedridden for ten days. This incident marked the onset of more pronounced symptoms. Upon returning home, a neurologist diagnosed Jutta with early-onset Alzheimer’s. The family embarked on a challenging journey through various medications, dealing with side effects and adjusting dosages, all while grappling with the emotional toll of the disease.

Trials and Triumphs with Treatment

Navigating the medical maze was a struggle. Each medication brought its own set of challenges, with nausea and side effects complicating treatment plans. The introduction of the new drug Leqembi offered a glimmer of hope, but the road to approval and administration was fraught with delays and bureaucratic hurdles. Karrie’s persistence paid off when Jutta finally received her first infusion, a rollercoaster of emotions culminating in a noticeable improvement in her condition.

A Glimpse of Hope

The changes in Jutta’s demeanor were profound. She became more engaged, recalling details and participating in family life with a renewed sense of clarity. The infusions brought her back from the brink, and her family relished the return of her vibrant personality. Jutta’s involvement in everyday activities, from gardening to attending Rotary events, brought immense joy to her loved ones.

A Family’s Resilience

Karrie’s narrative paints a vivid picture of the emotional and physical toll of Alzheimer’s on both the patient and their caregivers. The story is a testament to the unyielding love and determination of a daughter fighting to retain the essence of her mother amidst the ravages of a cruel disease.

Looking Forward

As Jutta continues her treatment, Karrie remains hopeful. The path is uncertain, with moments of progress tempered by setbacks. However, their journey is a beacon of hope for many families facing similar struggles. Karrie’s story is not just a recounting of challenges but a powerful reminder of the strength found in love and perseverance.
