Emma Heming Willis brings the emotional work of caregiving into view

Emma Heming Willis has spoken about the grief that accompanies changes in her husband Bruce Willis’s condition, while describing the continuing support of their family. Parade’s September 9 report drew on an interview she gave to HELLO! about life with frontotemporal dementia, or FTD.

Her account describes grief as something that returns throughout the illness, rather than a single experience. She also emphasized the relationships Bruce maintains with members of the family and the different ways they express their support.

Heming Willis urged the media to distinguish between forms of dementia and to avoid coverage that increases fear or stigma. Bruce’s diagnosis is FTD. The Association for Frontotemporal Degeneration confirmed that his family announced it in February 2023, following his retirement from acting after an earlier diagnosis of aphasia.

When the family made that announcement, they encouraged people affected by FTD to seek information and support through the association. AFTD also asked commentators to avoid speculation about Bruce’s individual symptoms. That distinction remains essential when discussing a public figure’s health: a family’s disclosed experience does not establish unreported medical details.
