"High Hopes” by Doris Day will always hold a special place in my heart because it was my mom’s favorite song to sing to me as a child whenever I needed cheering up. It became a song filled with love, comfort, and the reminder that even when life feels difficult, there is always hope.
My mom passed away from vascular dementia in 2025. About eight months before she passed, when she was no longer communicating much, I played this song for her. To my amazement, her face lit up, and she began singing along. Tears filled my eyes as I listened, realizing that despite how much this horrible disease had taken from her, a part of my mom was still there. In that moment, music brought us back together, and I felt the love and connection we had shared my entire life. I will treasure that memory forever.
