Jon Snow backs a clearer route from dementia concerns to care

Broadcaster Jon Snow has joined a campaign calling for faster dementia diagnosis and stronger support after diagnosis. ITV News reported on September 1 that he was among the signatories to a letter intended for Downing Street, alongside Alzheimer’s Society ambassadors including Vicky McClure and Sir Jonathan Pryce.

The campaign is backed by a charity survey of more than 1,000 carers. According to Alzheimer’s Society, 45% reported waiting more than six months for a diagnosis after first seeking help. Respondents also reported effects on employment and their ability to plan ahead.

The charity wants a national standard linking diagnosis to practical support: within 18 weeks of a GP referral, a person would receive an accurate diagnosis, a care plan and access to suitable treatment. This is a proposed standard, rather than a guarantee already in place.

Snow’s involvement follows his public disclosure in June that he had been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in 2023. Alzheimer’s Research UK confirmed that timeline when discussing a documentary about his life and work.
